5 Clutter-Free Gifts to Give This Holiday Season
(Thoughtful ideas from a professional organizer who’s seen enough “stuff” to last a lifetime!)
As a professional organizer, I see first-hand how holiday gifts can quickly turn into clutter, no matter how well-intentioned. The truth is, most people already have plenty of things. What they’re missing are experiences, indulgences, and little joys that don’t take up space.
This year, skip the wrapping paper and give something that won’t need to be donated or dusted later. Here are five clutter-free gift ideas your friends and family will actually use and love.
This year, try giving experiences instead of objects.
1. Gift Cards for Gamers
Digital gift cards are a minimalist’s dream. If you have a gamer in your life, PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, and Steam gift cards are all excellent options. They can download the exact game or add-on they want with no bulky packaging, no guessing, and no clutter.
It’s the easiest way to give something personal and useful without adding another box to the shelf.
The gamers in your family want game store gift cards. I promise!
2. Food (Always a Winner)
Consumable gifts are my personal favorite. Think fruit baskets from Harry & David, wine samplers, or cookie and brownie assortments. You can even give a restaurant gift card to their favorite local spot.
In my family, we have a long-standing tradition of giving Lifesaver gift boxes to the kids every year. It’s a small treat they look forward to and enjoy completely. Food gifts disappear by design, and that’s the beauty of them.
They will love a memorable dining experience!
3. A Tour (The Weirder, the Better!)
Tours make incredible gifts because they create memories, not clutter. In my opinion, the more unusual, the more fun!
Most sports stadiums offer behind-the-scenes tours where you can see locker rooms, the press box, or even step onto the field. You can also Google factory tours in your area. You'd be surprised by what’s open to the public. Many municipalities offer tours of water treatment plants, ecological preserves, airports (ok, I want to tour the airport now) and other fascinating facilities. One of my favorite tours is Alcatraz!
It’s the kind of gift people never think to buy for themselves, and that’s what makes it special.
Give somebody a weird tour for the holidays!
4. Entertainment
You can’t go wrong with a gift card from Ticketmaster or your local movie theater. Or, if you know there’s a show or concert they’d love, buy the tickets directly.
One of the best gifts I’ve ever received was a ticket to a drag show featuring a world-famous performer. It’s something I never would have splurged on for myself. I laughed all night and made a memory I’ll never forget. That’s the power of giving an experience.
Give the magic of the theater this year!
5. A Spa Day (or Kid-Friendly Adventure)
A spa package is the ultimate “treat yourself” gift. Consider including a massage, body wrap, manicure, and pedicure so your loved one can enjoy a full day of pampering and relaxation.
For kids, think amusement park passes, trampoline park passes, water park tickets, or a day at the zoo. Experiences like these give them something to look forward to, and the joy lasts long after the day is over.
Relaxation is an amazing gift!
